THE FIGURE OF
TORIBIO ECHEVARRIA

TORIBIO ECHEVARRIA IBARBIA WAS BORN IN EIBAR ON 27 APRIL, 1887. AT THE AGE OF 13 HE BEGAN TO WORK AS AN APPRENTICE ENGRAVER OR METAL WORKER. WHEN HE HAD BARELY REACHED MASTERY OF THE CRAFT, HE OPTED TO COMPETE FOR A PLACE IN THE SECRETARIAT OF THE CITY HALL OF EIBAR.

He was an insatiable reader who would soon become interested in social problems and the class struggle, to become one of the leaders of the evolution of socialism from Utopian to pragmatic. He applied himself fully to establishing the foundations that would lead to social justice: he contributed directly to the construction of a new “People’s House,” to union organizing and in creating the first consumer cooperative.

His entrepreneurial qualities began to manifest in the promotion and advisement of industrial cooperativism. In 1920 he founded Alfa, which would soon shift from armsproduction to sewing machines, making use of the best students from the first graduating class of the Armory School. Due to the enormous difficulties faced in the initial phase, Toribo was called upon as a trustworthy man by his own workers to manage the company, and he made possible the dreams of many worker and families. During part of the Republican period he was an adviser to Campsa in governmental representation.
