The strategic wager on the biosciences in the Basque Country with the creation of the BioBasque Strategy and the creation of the Órgano de Coordinación Biosanitaria (Agency for Biomedical Coordination) has actively promoted biotechnological activity in the region.

Thus, Gipuzkoa has a particularly promising biotechnological potential: the robust institutional ecosystem of R & D, for its strong assistance base, for international excellence of various groups and research centers, for the existence of a consolidated health system, by the growing fabric of biotechnology companies; as well as the existence of various R & D infrastructure (Science and Technology Park, Technology Centres, Cooperative Research Centres, Institute of Biomedical research …) and powerful industry groups who are potential users of biotechnology.

Strengthening and growth of this sector will require specific technical and human support. To this end, the specialized incubator was created in 2015 as part of BIC Gipuzkoa, for the Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Health sectors, with a proposal to add value through a system and network of expert work, geared as much toward preincubation phases as toward incubation and postincubation.

The vision and mission of the bioincubator will center on extracting all of the scientific and business potential from the biosciences, enhancing the transfer, supporting the value chain from the beginning and acting as a catalyst to significantly increase wealth and employment for the Gipuzkoan socioeconomy.

VALUATION

Valuation of technological projects in the biosciences/health
Specialised technical support through sectoral experts from the technology portfolio of technology centres and research teams with activity in biosciences/health, with the aim of identifying and analyzing the entrepreneurial initiatives with the greatest potential for transfer.

TRAINING

Training program, featuring both theory and practice, specializing in entrepreneurship in the biomedical field.
The 1st edition of the training program in biomedical entrepreneurship was held the last trimester of 2015.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The Bioincubator has a total of 774.12 m2, which are divided into the following areas:

  • 8 modules / independent laboratories
  • 1 Shared laboratory
  • 1 Cultivation room
  • 1 PCR room
  • 1 Refrigeration room
  • 1 Hardware room
  • 1 Wash room
  • 1 “Soft” area
  • 2 Meeting rooms
  • 1 Office

­All of the individual laboratories are equipped with laboratory furniture, as well as a separate room that can be set up as an office.
Additionally, the shared laboratory has all the instruments and equipment necessary to bring a task from the embryonic phase until its completion, such as extraction cabinets, cellular cultivation room, PCR, centrifuge, freezers, scales. etc.
